MindWing Concepts Blog

In each of our summer studies posts, we have been looking at recent research articles that may inform your use of Mindwing’s narrative and expository tools as you ease into a new school year. This post will look at a study that examined the expository language of typically developing 5th-9th graders along with their performance on a language elicitation protocol. In this way, the article provided key information about assessment, but also has supportive points for the use of the language structures of ThemeMaker^® both in assessment and intervention.

The Rules of the Game: Properties of a Database of Expository Language Samples (Heilmann and Malone, 2014) was written by two researchers working at the university and school district levels, respectively, in order to summarize their efforts at constructing a database to illuminate language skills for this older age group and serve as a clinical basis of comparison. The full article is available via ASHAWire (ASHA’s electronic publications portal) if you are a member.

By E.B. White -- Names and physical description of Characters are generally not problematic for a child. However, personality traits, motivation, and perspectives are more difficult. Multiple characters may be difficult to hold in memory. Our Character maps help in this area (Braidy the StoryBraid map, Story Grammar Marker map).

By Patricia Reilly Giff  — Read the story to the children. Review the Character Map. Discuss using illustrations and text to help fill in the maps. We have found it helpful to have a list of personality traits which have been generated by the children posted in the classroom. As the year progresses, add to the list. You may also like to add the title of the story and name of the character that the trait reflects… this makes it a nice way to reference back to previous stories that the students are already familiar. It is important to discuss WHY you choose certain personality traits to describe characters.

Over the years I have developed a special interest in collecting and using picture books that are tangential to the classroom curriculum. It’s wonderful to find books that contain touches of our content areas but aren’t “in your face” about it! These books can engage students in a story (and thus help them develop narrative language) while also providing a context to access abstract curriculum areas.

Although many schools cover this topic at different times of year, Spring is a great time for a science unit on the five senses. For younger students, this is a basic overview on how we experience the world though hearing, sight, smell, taste and touch. For older students, these simpler concepts can serve as an entry point to the more difficult intricacies of how the sensory system works. Additionally, May is Better Hearing and Speech Month in the USA and May Month in Canada, so what better time to talk about the sense of hearing, and maybe sync with some lessons about hearing and speech?...

In working with SLPs, teachers, other professionals and graduate students around the myriad ways I find Story Grammar Marker® useful in intervention, I often emphasize how narrative is at the crux of language functioning and social cognition. This post will explore this idea with an eye toward the concept of situational awareness, an area we can look at as critical for many of our students with social learning challenges--an appropriate topic for May as it is Better Speech and Hearing Month!

In their article, Social Learning and Social Functioning: Social Thinking's Cascade of Social Functioning, Michelle Garcia Winner and Pamela Crooke describe how awareness of situations serves as the foundation of interactions. Social functioning can then be considered a "cascade" of additional skills such as self-awareness within a situation (and understanding of one's own possible role in the ongoing situation) and abstracting and interpreting the ongoing language and actions of others.

To kick off Better Hearing and Speech Month we wanted to share MindWing Concepts’ Pragmatics Chart and Pragmatics Poster. We also suggest a wonderful book to use in conjunction with the chart and poster for lessons on the social uses of language; including body language, tone of voice as well as listening and speaking skills, which are a large part of the Common Core State Standards. This book is Decibella and Her 6-Inch Voice by Julia Cook (Author), Anita Du Falla (Illustrator). The ideas and illustrations are perfect for Better Hearing and Speech Month because they focus on speaking (and listening) skills!
